Devlog 3 : Production Phase

Hello Everyone, this week the FoodFight team has started with the production phase. It will consist of three sprints. the first one we are in now will last three weeks. We are splitting this up so that we would definitely stay on schedule and get the project finished in time.

Props

This week the artists started creating concept art for the most important props. Not every idea we had was equally easy to turn into concept art. eg a squid lasso, but don't worry, we found very nice concepts on the chosen food combination that we had. We then converted them to 3D in the modeling software Maya. This was not easy because some concepts were quite organic, but we did our best and got very good results.

Below are a few pages of concept art that our artists Rick and Jorrit came up with. The concept art drawn below was for the Pufferfish Molotov, Squid Spaghetti and Popcorn Shotgun.

Our food models have been unwrapped but are not textured yet as we have yet to make the master texture that will be used for the food props. We are currently using a temporary material to color the models. These are the rough scales of the food items that will be in our final game.

Kenneth also experimented with different level layouts for our game which are shown below. As our game would have a mechanic that allows the player to create Squid Spaghetti which acts as a lasso and pulls other players, we thought it would be nice if there were parts of the map that players could fall into and get damaged by. We also experimented with different layouts of the beach and how the player would interact with it. We also thought it would be interesting if parts of the restaurant was built over the water.

Coding

This week we started porting features from the prototype to production. Everything went smoothly so far, except for the input system. We struggled hard making it work. The problem is that the new Input System in unity does not have much documentation, and we did not have the budget to move to a paid input package. We eventually figured it out, but might disband ps4 controller support in the future, as it causes bugs within the unity input system.

Thanks for reading the Devlog, and we hope to see you next week!
