Devlog 9: Polishing the game

Hello everyone This week we started the third and final sprint, the polish sprint. In this sprint the aim is to improve the game as much as possible without adding features that can change the gameplay. First we discussed with the whole team what we needed to make the game better. After writing everything down, we took out the most important things and got to work. Let's go over what we've improved on the game and where it went wrong this week.

Art

This week the artists have done a lot of things. Because the tasks themselves were not too big, we were able to do a lot. First off, we've made some minor tweaks to the level: deleting barrels, transitioning between 2 floor types and deleting an invisible wall. There is now also a wall under water so you can't walk too far.

The environment has also been upgraded. There is now a wind shader that makes the trees move. In addition, grass and seaweed have been added. The surrounding islands are now more integrated and have trees and rocks so that it all blends together nicely. We now also have 3 small rafts in the sea.

Moreover we've  made a food stain decal that will appear when the popcorn shotgun is fired, leaving  stains all over the place. This really will make you feel like you're having a food fight. The decal itself took unfortunately  more time than expected because it was a bit unclear how to make it in unity with the universal render pipeline, but in the end we got a good result and now we can make a new one in 10 min.

Finally, we made an animation for the shotgun and the squid was rigged by one of the artists. Its animation is not finished yet, because there are some problems with the deformation, we do however have new upgraded UI icons to replace the previous ones with a new UI Layout in mind.

Programming

This week we implemented all the sounds we had gotten from the sound designer.

These include footstep sounds on different materials like sand or wood, and sounds for each type of combo item when used.

We've also added controller support to the main menu and fixed a massive issue with the death box in case a player was to run outside the level.

Thanks for reading the Devlog, and we hope to see you next week!
